Nymphomania and the New Sexual Revolution

This is the dawning of the Age of Nymphomania.

  • Nymphomania – Uncontrollable or excessive sexual desire in a woman – Oxford Dictionary
  • Nymphomania – Hypersexuality: female sex drive that is obsessively high. Considered a mental illness, colloquially meaning a horny girl – Urban Dictionary

After the long years of the Sexual Revolution, bra burning, feminism, post feminism, equal rights and sexual rights, those born in the smouldering ash of these struggles view the 21st century as a time of authentic sexual liberation, a freedom to choose, a freedom to say no and, more important, the freedom to say yes.

girl with nymphomania

Women who have a healthy sex drive have always been labelled a nymphomaniac, the word used as a synonym of slut, slag, whore, hoe, hooker, tramp, bitch and a million more unforgiving words that ring out from men’s tongues like nails being hammered into a coffin. There are few words to describe a man who relishes long frequent bouts between the bedsheets – stud, hunk, beefcake, silkier words more flattering than derogatory.

The male equivalent of nymphomania is satyriasis, seldom used and lacking the whippy rhythms of the Greek nymphomania – nymph, meaning bride or young wife, those gorgeous female deities in mythology who can never be tamed, protectors of springs, mountains and rivers. Mania, of course, means mania: mental illness marked by periods of euphoria or excitement, delusions, and manic activity.

Nymphomania Punishments

Women who adore sex have always been seen as deviants living in a twilight world outside the social norms of gender expectation. In Victorian times, a woman judged by doctors, priests or husbands to ‘suffer’ nymphomania would be treated with ice cold baths, enforced bed rest, followed by leeching – placing leeches on the vagina – and, in extreme cases, a surgeon would remove a woman’s clitoris and ovaries.

From the day the apple ripened in Eden, man has found in scripture justifications to invent chastity belts, foot binding, witch hunts, ducking stools. Still now, in modern times, we have virginity tests, Purity Balls, female genital mutilation, burkas and the glass ceiling.

Genesis 3,1-16 describes Eve being seduced by the serpent before persuading Adam to eat the apple. They are scolded by the Almighty, who says to Eve: ‘I will multiply your pains in childbirth. You will long for your husband, but he will lord it over you.’

Suppressing women has been interpreted as a command from the lips of God. But did she really say that? Or did some scribe unable to satisfy his wife’s nymphomania slip it into the text as a penance? Books until recent times were only written by men and women writers have always been seen as sly, scheming and dangerous.

Nymphomania Pleasures

Finally, thousand of years of subjugation have come to an end – at least in some parts of the world. There is no longer a need for young women to feel objectified, that they are mere reflections of men’s desires and destinies. Nymphomania in the new sexual revolution is hip, honest, joyful and bringing about more equality than bra burning ever did.

In the past, sex was seen as something girls gave and men took. No longer. Girls are climbing on top and treating sex as something to be pursued and relished, preferably every day, with as many partners as possible, two at a time if it takes your fancy.

I remember an old joke: every man’s dream is to marry a nymphomaniac whose father owns a bar. Less funny now as I write it down than it was being told by some tubby bloke as a chat up line and whose name I can no longer recall. Men are drawn to the perception of nymphomania and, while they may dream of finding a nymphomaniac, they don’t want to find her inside their own girlfriend.

In the 1970s, nymphomania was termed hypersexuality by a group of ex-members of Alcoholics Anonymous who claimed to discover the same compulsive behaviours with sex as they did with alcohol. Self-help groups were set up to cure this new generation of sex addicts.

They believed that nymphomania was the same as addiction to drugs, alcohol, bitterness, envy, ambition – that a nymphomaniac never experiences the full pleasure of orgasm and, as with all addictions, it ends up destroying the addict.

All nonsense, of course, and in an unlikely stroke of common sense, plans in 2010 to add sexual addiction to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) was dropped after the American Psychiatric Association refused to support the proposal.  A cause driven by men, it was hard for them to believe that a girl with nymphomania didn’t crave sex because she never reached orgasm, but the reverse: she always reaches orgasm.

I wrote in one of my books that every time a girl has an orgasm an angel comes to life. It certainly feels that way and the girl with nymphomania is just trying to populate the heavens with angels.

  • ma plume
    resterrait suspendue
    amour soudain muet
    de secrets murmurés
    de tant de bonheur

  • I read your latest post with great interest. I agree that we are reaching a time when a girl can explore her sexuality without being given a lot of negative labels and people are becoming more open to all sorts of bedroom activities. I do think though that people have different types of experiences when it comes to satisfying their animal desires. A lovely and intelligent girl like you will be able to choose from a variety of desirable suitors and this will certainly increase the chances of creating spectacular memories beneath the sheets. Some women do not have these options, for a number of different reasons, and this can lead to uninspiring or even damaging encounters with men or even other women. I do agree very much that sex is a wonderful gift and it is a marvellous thing that a lot of girls are taking control of their sexuality and their orgasms. Your line about men not wanting a nymphomaniac inside their girlfriend did make me laugh because it is true. It is not easy to be given the task of satisfying an insatiable girl so men will have to begin training their minds and bodies if they hope to compete in this new age.👍

  • I seriously doubt that this is true. The premise is flawed. We are not in an age of promiscuity and sexual freedom. not is it the dawn of the age of nymphomaniacs, Sexual freedom works for some singles and some swingers, but it does not create stable families. Without stable families, we are screwed globally. Modern as these ideas may seem to be, they are full of self gratification and have nothing to do with the love that makes the world go around. That were have sexual desires is a universal given. That these desires must be controlled for the perpetuity of the species is also a given. Men and women will always get jealous of another that threatens their long term security and stability of their family life. Simple as that.

  • I believe that to a point a man will always desire a woman that has a healthy sex drive, but as a threshold becomes blurry, problems arise. If a woman is relatively insatiable, there will be an inherent threat to the relationship.

First of all, not many men have only the relationship as a priority. Many have things such as careers and others vying for their time and attention, ie: children. If a man’s only concern was to tend to his woman’s libido, there wouldn’t be too much of an issue for him, but for most men, that is for the most part a fantasy.

A man doesn’t need to be preoccupied with having to be sure that he has fully tended to his woman’s unquenchable desire to be properly bedded, or if not, she will soon be looking for someone else who will do it for her. Realistically or not, this is an issue for men to deal with.

This is not an ego issue by any means. It is an issue of the stability and longevity of a real and substantial relationship. No man desires to be with a woman that is happy to have sex only once a month, but to be with a woman that can’t be happy unless she has no less than two dozen orgasms a day is a fantasy that only a woman may have. Or perhaps a man that had inherited enough to retire on, because no working man could enjoy living that dream. This reminds me of a growing joke that I have been hearing lately; where more and more women say that they want to weigh 100 kg or more if they wish, act as obnoxious as they want to be when the mood strikes, and not care one bit about their appearance, and whichever man they select is going to be happy about it.

Sure. Dream on. You may get away with what you can when you have your youth and beauty, but when the calendar catches up to you, and you have neither youth or beauty any longer, what are you going to rely on when no respectable man wants to touch you, after knowing that hundreds of other men have already been with you?

In the age where the number of incurable STDs are growing while appearing out of thin air, common sense is priceless, yet is seldom practiced.

  • I always knew there was nothing wrong with me but something wrong with a society that dousnot recognise the importance of sex. – every day!

  • With girls showing nude selfies at 14 and dating sites encouraging people to find a different sex partner every day, I would say Chloe is right about this, we have reached the age of nymphomania. And it does make me wonder: What Next?
